Andel Plastics Ltd are a Made in the Midlands Bronze Member
This time last year Andel Plastics was announcing the fact that the 40th year in business had seen the culmination of a 5 year succession plan. At this time last year we were confirming the management buyout of Andel of Helen’s parents Barrie and Andrea Flowers, by daughter Helen Flowers (Pitt) and Graham Robinson.
This year has proved to be the most exciting in the history of Andel so far. With the implement of a cleanroom and lots of investment projects coming to fruition and the ramping up of production. The number of employee’s has risen and new and old employees have really risen to the challenge of the increase in production and range of products. Even helping to put on night shifts when production pressures have necessitated it.
It was so lovely then to be able to celebrate the 40th anniversary with the employee’s and their family and friends at Andel’s open day and hog roast.
The event was well attended with a visit from The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, who toured the factory and met employee’s, customers, suppliers. It was such a pleasure to have The Lord Mayor join us and help to recognise the achievements of the business. Andel has weathered the Handsworth riots, with employee’s helping to get each other safely in and out of the area. Two recessions and a premises move happening during the more recent one.
However, the culture of the company has always been a one for all approach and everyone wants the business to succeed and carry on for another 40 years providing the friendly flexible environment to work in and one of the best reputations in the business.
At the end of this first buyout year, the investment is starting to pay off with records sales and profitability. The largest range of products and services, whilst maintaining always the core value of the business. Quality and precision.
In October the recognition of the business strategy has come from within the industry as well, which has become a real moment of pride and motivation for everyone. Firstly, we were given a Company of the Year award by and Industry publication. Followed by a Visionary excellence award for the succession planning implementation and lastly the very prestigious Plastics Industry Awards winning status for Best Business Initiative for 2015.
Graham Robinson, who collected the award had joked with his other table guests that Andel Plastics was only there to make up the numbers. So they and he were delighted when Allan Davies announced the winners of the category to be Andel.
Graham said ‘I feel like I have won the FA cup final, people said to me that we were the smallest business there and the most exciting one to keep an eye on in the future’ ‘This is the proudest moment and I was so happy to be able to share it with my son stood next to me”
Helen who couldn’t be there on the evening, later commented that it was the best thing she could have done to honour her parents and all the work they put in over the 40 years. ‘Graham and I were given a great vehicle to take over and drive on, I hope I have done them proud’
We are still in the finalist category for the Midland Business Awards, fingers crossed.
